High School King of Savvy

High School King of Savvy is just as wonderfully outrageous and funny as it sounds. A sweet romantic-comedy dressed up in secret-identity clothing, this show was fresh and cute and hit all the right spots for me.

This is the story of Lee Min-seok, a high school player with a passion for hockey. He lives a fairly easy life with his father and grandfather, and despite the fact his older brother (who happens to look exactly like him) is often away, he's happy. That is, until he gets a mysterious call from his older brother one night, who tells him that he's gotten himself into some trouble and needs Min-seok's help. He just landed a new job in Korea, but since he can't make it he needs Min-seok to pretend to be him for a while. So Min-seok is swept up into a new chaotic life, where not only does he have to juggle school and work, but also has to handle the fact that he's falling for his quirky secretary, who's ten years older than him.

As usual, I just can't get enough of Seo In-guk. He's always winning, no matter what kind of role he plays. Although Hello Monster is most definitely my favourite of his shows, Lee Min-seok may be my favourite of his roles. The best part of High School King of Savvy was that I could completely relate - I saw this for the first time as a student, and I've never worked in a company, so Min-seok's cluelessness towards business mirrors mine. It was fun to see how he would improvise in his ridiculous situation! It goes to show what a talented actor he is - he went from this fun, playful character to the cold, sharp Lee Hyeon in Hello Monster, to the adorable manchild I'm currently seeing in Shopping King Louie. Anyhow, Seo In-guk was definitely the highlight of High School King of Savvy, he just brought the show to life. As odd as I find Lee Hana, she was almost as adorable, and the two of them had unbelievable romantic chemistry.
  I'm always rambling about how a show should do it's characters justice. Well, it's fair to say that there wasn't a dull or underwritten character in sight here. These characters don't just exist for the sake of creating conflict, they all have their own quirks and stories, we just don't delve too deeply into them. That proves the quality of the writing behind this show.
  High School King of Savvy kind of feels like comfort food. Whilst it can be unique and exciting, ultimately it's warm at the core. Whilst it wasn't perfect by any means, it was absolutely delicous. It's a speedy and a little unconventional romantic-comedy with complicated characters and a fun plot. The nicest thing about it is that the sub-plots are equally as interesting as the main couple. A common fault in romance stories is that everything pales in comparison to the romance itself, so sometimes as a viewer you tune out and wait for the characters you care about to appear again. But this romance is fuelled by work, by an unbelievable secret, and so every moment was entertaining. Sometimes I really wish I was Lee Hana.
